Micro-management. Macro-lie
Eureka! moment
It’s obvious that micromanagement is bad, right?
But is it a hardly harmful practice, or just a manager’s minor flaw?
I think both answers are actually correct, though, from the manager’s viewpoint
But what about the founder’s perspective?
Here comes my Eureka!
I believe I’ve recently identified at least four outcomes of micromanagement that are more dangerous, placing the founder’s stance at a central point.
What I think
From the founder’s perspective, micromanagement:
takes your TIME , which could be more impactful if used in areas where you have 10x leverage
takes your MONEY , because you are unable to drive the best outcomes in any of the areas ‘polluted’ with that bad habit
takes away the team’s OPPORTUNITY to demonstrate engagement in facing challenges and committing to your company’s vision
and finally, it infects you with a FALSE PICTURE of your personal capabilities (“I’m working 15 hrs a day, and where are the results?”) and your team’s actual value to the business
It seems that micromanagement is the best way to build a mediocre company. And given our stress levels, it is also a path that has no point.
